Austerlitz, Moravia – 1805 Battle Map
On the freezing morning of 2 December 1805, two emperors watched their combined armies advance across the Moravian countryside east of Brünn, confident they would crush a smaller French force. By nightfall, the Grande Armée had broken them. This map records the ground where Napoleon defeated the allied armies of Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Holy Roman Emperor Francis II in the engagement history remembers as the Battle of the Three Emperors. It is the battlefield as contemporaries charted it — the villages, heights, and frozen ponds that decided the campaign in a single day.
Historical Context By late 1805, Napoleon's campaign against the Third Coalition had already forced the surrender of an Austrian army at Ulm, but the Russian and remaining Austrian forces under Tsar Alexander I and Emperor Francis II still held the field. Napoleon deliberately drew the Allies toward him near the village of Austerlitz, weakening his right flank to invite an attack that would pull the enemy off the commanding Pratzen Heights. On the morning of 2 December, the Allies took the bait and committed their strength against the French right. Napoleon then struck the thinned allied center at the Pratzen, splitting the coalition army in two and driving part of it back onto the frozen ponds to the south. The victory came on the first anniversary of his coronation as Emperor of the French.
The Map's Features Titled in German, this plan depicts the country around Austerlitz in Moravia with the positions of the combined Russian and Austrian armies and the French army arrayed for battle. The fortified city of Brünn anchors the western edge, its star-shaped citadel clearly drawn, while Austerlitz sits to the east across the contested ground of the Pratzen plateau. Hachured relief marks the rolling heights and valleys that shaped the fighting, and the road network, villages, and the string of ponds near Telnitz and Sokolnitz are labeled throughout. Contrasting colored blocks record the dispositions of the opposing armies across the field.
Historical Significance Austerlitz is widely studied as a model of maneuver warfare, won by an outnumbered force through timing and control of terrain rather than weight of numbers. The defeat shattered the Third Coalition and forced Austria to sign the Treaty of Pressburg within weeks, ceding territory and withdrawing from the war. It also broke the standing of the Holy Roman Empire, which Francis II would formally dissolve the following year. This map preserves the disposition of forces on the day that reshaped the balance of power in Europe.
