The Battle of the Wilderness was fought in early May 1864 between Grant and Lee as apart of Grant's Overland Campaign. The battle took place in north central Virginia. During the engagement, the field caught fire and produced casualties on both sides in an extremely horrible way. 

This map shows units on the second day of the battle, 6 May. Prominent features shown are Orange Pike and Orange Plank Road.
