Battle of Trenton – 1776 Campaign Map

The Battle of Trenton was fought on 26 December 1776 between General George Washington’s Continental Army and Hessian forces aligned with the British Crown. After crossing the icy Delaware River on Christmas night, Washington’s troops executed a surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton the following morning—reviving Patriot morale at a critical moment in the Revolutionary War.

Historical Context

By late 1776, the Continental Army had suffered a series of defeats in New York and was in retreat across New Jersey. Enlistments were expiring, and morale was dangerously low. Washington’s bold decision to cross the Delaware under cover of darkness and strike at Trenton was a calculated risk designed to regain the initiative. The successful surprise attack secured much-needed prisoners, supplies, and—most importantly—a psychological turning point for the American cause.

The Map’s Features

This hand-drawn battlefield map illustrates the town of Trenton, the Delaware River crossing, and the American routes of march along the upper and lower roads leading into the engagement. Military positions, defensive points, and troop movements are carefully noted. A detailed written explanation section appears along the right side, providing contemporary annotations describing the phases of the attack.

Historical Significance

The American victory at Trenton marked a decisive morale boost for the Revolutionary Army and set the stage for subsequent successes at Princeton and beyond. The engagement demonstrated Washington’s willingness to take bold operational risks and remains one of the most iconic moments of the American Revolution.
